One of my favourite parts of being a wedding photographer here in North Devon is being able to capture some of the most stunning winter coastal weddings, in varying conditions with the rugged backdrop of the Atlantic ocean and Lundy Island. Nicky & Olly’s big day was no different, it started out blustery and grey, so all the morning preparation shots took place inside the beautiful house which looked out over Croyde Bay (the next town along from Woolacombe) where the entire wedding party were staying for the weekend. As it was a small affair, both the bride & groom’s families all got ready together under one roof.
The Bride’s big reveal walking down the stairs was a beautifully emotional moment witnessed by all the family and her groom to be, which made for a unique ‘groom’s first look’ one of my favourite and most imperative reactions to get at every wedding I photograph. Then it was off to the Watersmeet Hotel in Woolacombe, where the ceremony was to take place.
Mother Nature was kind and granted us some fantastic wintery low light in the afternoon, which poured through the windows enabling me to take some dramatic portraits. I took the newly wed bride & groom out into the gardens and together they embraced the cold sea air, smiled into the dusky sunlight, and listened to the sound of the breaking surf in the distance…what better backdrop for a wedding day!
